Power Supply/Motor Limit Test
Objective
To investigate and test the maximum load, know as the limit, the motor can lift when using the approved power supply.
Definition and Theory
Electric motors work by using electromagnets. The strength of the motor is based on the amount of electric current that is passed through coils in the armature generating a magnetic field. Please read the following three on-line articles titled, "How Electromagnets Work, "How Electric Motors Work, and Inside an Electric Motor."
Procedure
- Procedure
This experiment is designed to provide very practical data on the performance of your motors. Two tests will be conducted using 12 volts of current. Each test will lift a load, in 25-penny increments, until the lifting limit of the motor is reached. When the lifting limit of the motor has been reached, turn off the current as soon as possible as not to damage or burn out the motor! In the first series of experiment, take up all of the slack in the line so the motor is under load when the current is applied. In the second series of experiment, allow slack in the he motor so it can turn a few revolutions before the load is applied. In both experiments:
- Graph the relationship between the amount pennies lifted and the point where the motor stops lifting the load.
- Answer the questions in the lab.
