Background and History of the Center:

SUNY Farmingdale is the site of the first utility scale photovoltaic demonstration project in the northeast U.S.A. Three 20 KW units in 1992 and one 20 KW unit in 1993 were installed at various locations on campus.

Solar Energy holds the potential as a sustainable clean energy source with competitive rates provided it is harnessed suitably. The college has faculty expertise in electricity, electronic controls, heat transfer and fluid mechanics to conduct applied research in the field of solar energy. To provide support to the development of infrastructure for popularizing this clean energy source by the Long Island community, the college is in the process of initiating steps to utilize this large scale demonstration project in education, research and community service. SUNY Farmingdale, LIPA and Keyspan are working on short term as well as long term needs of the local industry. Farmingdale Solar Energy center is planning to provide training in installation and maintenance of PV panels as its first and one of the most important steps to meet the local industry needs.
