Restroom Space Requirements

A restroom should be located within 200 ft of every permanent workstation. Decentralized restrooms often provide greater employee convenience than large, centralized restrooms. The recommended minimum number of toilets for the number of employees working within a facility are given in Table 1.

For space planning purposes, 15 ft2 should be allowed for each toilet and 6 ft2 for each urinal. Wheelchair accommodation for handicapped employees should also be included.

There should be a minimum of one sink per three toilets.

24 linear inches of sink or 20 inches of circular basin should be equated to one sink.

6 ft2 should be allowed for each sink.

Use 15 ft2 for the entrance to the restroom.

Add all the sink, toilet, urinal, and 15 ft2 for the entrance and multiply the total space by 150 %.

Example: Office building with 110 employees.

30 male employees ( minimum requirements: 2 toilets and 1 urinal, 1 sink)

80 female employees (minimum requirements: 4 toilets, 2 sinks)
