Farmingdale State College

Science and Technology Programs (STEP and CSTEP)

The Science and Technology Programs at Farmingdale State College, a campus of the State University of New York (SUNY), are made up of two main academic components: the Collegiate Science and Technology Program (CSTEP) and the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP).  Farmingdale CSTEP and STEP are part of the state-wide educational programs that are sponsored and funded by the Department of Education of the State of New York. The primary objectives of the programs are to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education among underrepresented students and to enhance their participation in licensed professions and higher education.

Collegiate Science and Technology Program (CSTEP)

The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) were established at Farmingdale State College during the academic year 1999-2000.  It is one of only 49 programs in New York State. The primary objectives of CSTEP are to develop and retain students enrolled in the undergraduate programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to prepare them for careers in the licensed professions, and to pursue higher studies and research in STEM fields.  CSTEP accomplishes its objectives by offering instructional programs, enabling participation in scholarly activities, conducting conferences and workshops, providing support for guided research and industry sponsored internship programs, and conducting programs aimed at developing skills and competencies for ethical and professional practice in the students chosen field. While CSTEP brings together faculty and students from a broad spectrum of academic programs on campus to undertake projects of mutual interest, it promotes and enables collaborative activities with the science and technology programs at other institutions in the region.  CSTEP also serves as an excellent tool to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics education at the middle and high schools by enabling its members to serve as mentors for STEP students.

Becoming a member of CSTEP

CSTEP is designed for New York State residents (including permanent resident aliens) who belong to groups historically underrepresented in scientific, technical, health-related, or licensed professions or who are economically disadvantaged, and who demonstrate interest in, and potential for, a CSTEP-targeted profession. CSTEP students must be enrolled full-time and in good academic standing in an approved scientific, technical, health-related, pre-professional or professional undergraduate or graduate program of study.

Anyone meeting the criteria and interested in becoming a member of CSTEP should contact the CSTEP office.

Science and Technology Program (STEP)

The Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) were established at Farmingdale State College during the academic year 1989-1990.  It is one of about 50 programs in New York State serving middle and high school students. STEP offers academic programs, enrichment activities and support services aimed at enhancing the skills and competencies necessary for students in grades 7 - 12 for entry into college- level programs in science, engineering, technology, health sciences, and licensed professions.  The academic programs offered by STEP include lab-based instruction in such areas as mathematics, biosciences, physical sciences, health sciences, computer applications, engineering technology, aviation, management technology, and written communication.  The enrichment programs of STEP include college-level courses, in-school tutorials in mathematics and sciences, team work and leadership development opportunities as well as hands-on projects in science and engineering technologies. The support services offered by STEP include academic counseling and advising, college entry test preparations, arrangements for summer internships, field trips to industry sites and academic institutions, and opportunities for participation in regional conferences.
